HYUNDAI'S NEW GENESIS SUB-BRAND UNVEILS G90 FLAGSHIP

Hyundai's new Genesis sub-brand unveils G90 flagship

Hyundai's newly-formed Genesis sub-brand has introduced the G90, its very first model, at a special event held in South Korea. Positioned at the very top of the Genesis lineup, the G90 is a posh sedan that's billed as a replacement for the six-year old Hyundai Equus.

The G90 ushers in the Athletic Elegance design language that will influence every upcoming member of the Genesis family. Heavily inspired by the Vision G concept that was introduced earlier this year, the sedan boasts an upscale-looking front fascia characterized by boomerang-shaped LED headlights, a sculpted hood, and a hexagonal grille with a chrome frame and horizontal slats. A large Genesis emblem proudly sits right above the grille.

Beyond the front end, the G90 features a long, flowing silhouette that's accented by pronounced wheel arches and a sprinkling of chrome trim. It's important to note that the images show the South Korean-spec model, but the version we'll get on our shores is expected to be all but identical.

In select markets, Genesis will offer the G90 with a long list of electronic driving aids including a semi-autonomous function called Highway Driving Assistance, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, and a Lane Keeping system. Additionally, the sedan packs a Smart Posture Caring system that takes into account the driver's height and automatically adjusts the seat, the position of the steering wheel, the door mirrors, and the heads-up display.

South Korean buyers will be asked to choose from three engines: an entry-level 3.8-liter GDI V6 rated at 310 horsepower, a new 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged T-GDI V6 tuned to generate 365 ponies, and a 5.0-liter V8 that pumps out 419 horsepower. All engines ship with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, but weather-beating all-wheel drive is available at an extra cost.

The U.S.-spec version of the Genesis G90 will likely make its public debut next month at the Detroit Motor Show, and it will go on sale shortly after as a 2017 model. Pricing information will be announced at a later date.

What's next?

Hyundai has confirmed plans to launch a total of six new Genesis-branded models before the decade draws to a close. The next-gen Genesis coupe will likely lose its Hyundai emblem, and recent rumors indicate the G90 will be joined by a full-size crossover aimed directly at the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and the BMW X5. The Genesis lineup will be largely aimed at buyers in the United States, China, Russia, and the Middle East.
